A Thousand Stars: Episode VI, Part 3
May. 14th, 2026 06:58 pmThis far into the film, and the only glimpse we've gotten of our main heroes is a hologram of Luke, giving away the droids with apparent unconcern, and the still-frozen Han hung from the wall like sadistic artwork. It doesn't seem like a very impressive rescue attempt. Then Chewie shows up as the chained prisoner of a bounty hunter.
What is going on? We just have to wait and trust that the plan is going better than it looks. Lando makes a brief appearance as an undercover guard, but it's not till the mysterious bounty hunter shows up again that we start to suspect who's under the mask. With coloring and lighting effects that still hold up pretty well, Han is finally defrosted. And the hunter unmasks to reveal, of course, Leia.
I like to think of this unmasking as a subtle foreshadowing of what's coming near the end of this film, as well as symbolic of the broader themes of identity, revelations and transformations. I don't believe it's a coincidence that Han emerges from the carbonite with similar visual markers of a newborn. Wet, blind, confused, needing support to move. It's a rebirth, and he's not the same person he was.
Next, another paradigm shift...
