A Thousand Stars: Episode VI, Part 2

So after the prelude with the Imperial forces, we come to the rescue mission we all anticipated after Han's plight at the end of the last film. But why are we following the two droids again, reminiscent of their hapless adventures on Tatooine from Episode IV? Where is Luke? Leia? Threepio claims that Lando and Chewie never returned, so that's ominous.
Jabba's palace is pretty darn ominous too, with its intimidating height and forbidding closed gates. Even when the droids are permitted into its cavernous interior, the dimly-lit space full of grim and ghastly guards and creatures is not exactly a reassuring setting. The closing of the gate might as well be a knell of doom as far as Threepio's concerned.
But as I've explored before, nothing is quite what it seems in this sequence. Plenty of surprises to come -- starting with a mysterious masked stranger...
