The dialogue near the start of the film gave us a little clue to the next segment: Hoth has frequent meteors. Because they're right next to an asteroid field. Now, any decent astronomer could tell you that asteroids are actually in much more stable orbits than are portrayed here, but let's not get caught up in realism details. There's no sound in space either. Imagine how dull these films would be without the spectacular sound effects!

So we get a wild ride, realistic or not, as Han decides to deliberately enter the chaos of massive hurtling rocks in the desperate hope of evading the Empire's fleet. It's a kinesthetic feast. Once again the editing convinces us that our heroes in the cockpit really are surrounded by asteroids, constantly in danger of crashing. Less fortunate ships spin and explode in every direction.

When Han suggests moving closer, we probably have the same horrified response as Threepio. But then a new perspective reminds us that some of these asteroids are almost moon-sized. A series of tightly-edited shots shows the Falcon doing a graceful loop-de-loop into a cave, and the adrenaline-filled segment settles down, the strident notes of the chase giving way to a soaring version of Han and Leia's theme. Let's all take a breath and relax for a bit.

But next time, things are not what they seem....
