matrilWho is the hero of the first Star Wars movie? It's really a joint effort between Luke and Leia. But rather than introducing either of them right away, Lucas sets up these two lowly droids to carry the narrative. Through them, we see how our heroes step up to make things happen.
Our first glimpse of Leia comes from Threepio's viewpoint, through the smoky haze of battle. These distinctive poses will be familiar to us when we see her hologram recording later on, but for now she is a mysterious, dream-like figure. She hasn't even had any dialogue yet, but we have this final shot of her intensely watching the droids, and we know that something important is happening. Something that this quiet somber young woman has put into action.
Next time, actions continue to speak louder than words....
