A Thousand Stars: Episode III, Part 15
Feb. 1st, 2024 02:10 pmWhen the Council decides to send Obi-Wan after Grievous and not Anakin, he seems to handle it better than his last disagreement with the Council. But Palpatine's whispers are still working their pernicious poison upon his mind, as we see when he bids Obi-Wan farewell. This moment is especially bittersweet when you know it's the last time these two will speak together as friends.

Anakin genuinely wants to make things right with his old master. He apologizes for his behavior and expresses gratitude for Obi-Wan's support. But he doesn't pretend to be content. He's frustrated. He feels held back, under-appreciated.
Sound familiar? Obi-Wan was feeling very similar resentments back in Episode I, and Qui-Gon provided wise encouragement and reassurance. So he's quite happy to do the same for Anakin.

Almost the same expression that Qui-Wan wears when he praises his Padawan.

Little does Obi-Wan know just how deep Anakin's anguish goes. His fears of Padmé's death, the lure of Dark Side abilities, the deliberate wedge Palpatine is driving between him and the Jedi...a few kind words aren't enough to remedy that. Obi-Wan is in the light, but Anakin lingers in the shadows.

And after he smiles for a departing Obi-Wan, his face slips into something far more ambivalent and unsettled.

Next time, troubling parallels....
