matrilAs Palpatine surely predicted, the Council allows Anakin into their number but denies him the rank of Master. This pronouncement, and Anakin's shocked reaction, are marked by a tension that includes far more players than just the speaking roles of Mace and Anakin. Note how just a few cuts to certain faces serve to stretch that single moment surrounding Anakin's What?! into a painful eternity.
Beforehand, Anakin maintains a façade of calm dignity, while inwardly filled with eager pride.
After Mace denies the rank. A subtle change, but the fateful word has been blurted. And Meaningful Looks start getting exchanged.
Mind you, this all starts before Anakin's prolonged complaint, the much-memed "how can you be on the Council and not be a Master?" rant. By the time he really gets going, we're all squirming in our seats, even though no one on the Council is even saying or actively doing anything. Just sharing severe glances. That's all we need to know that things are very, very uncomfortable. Exactly as Palpatine planned.
