A Thousand Stars: Episode III, Part 10
Dec. 29th, 2023 09:50 amIt always impresses me that Anakin goes straight to Yoda for advice after his nightmare. He's trying to do the right thing and follow the Jedi way, he really is. Even if he withholds...a bit of the truth.
Now, it certainly evokes an eerie symbolism that Anakin is wreathed in so much shadow, only a single eye has any light upon it.

But nearly the same could be said of Yoda as well.

This is, overall, a scene about the awful uncertainty of the future and the darkness that surrounds us when we try to make sense of it or alter its course. I think that both Yoda and Anakin are trapped in ignorance here; Anakin because he cannot comprehend how to deal with loss, and Yoda because he cannot appreciate the anguish that Anakin is enduring (don't mourn those you lose? Then tell me what Yoda is doing some scenes later when ALL THE JEDI DIE AT ONCE and he's overcome with sorrow). Yoda is wise and experienced, but he can't offer Anakin what he really needs. Perhaps something like what he tells Luke in Episode V: "Always in motion, the future." But who knows for sure what would have granted Anakin the proper assurance and guidance. And Anakin, well, he's definitely veering into dangerous dark territory with his terror of loss and the determination to avoid it at all costs. This scene presages a whole lot of darkness and pain.
Next time, a decided passivity of staging....
