A Thousand Stars: Episode II, Part 23
Apr. 27th, 2023 05:45 pmAnakin's return to Tatooine is a portentous occasion. I had a dream I was a Jedi. I came back here and freed all the slaves. The first part has come true, and now he's come back...but a widespread liberation is not in his power. His mother's peril is of a different sort. To learn more, he must confront his former master.
A brief nod, first, to the second time Anakin helps Padmé out of a vehicle. We know as well as he does that she doesn't need the literal physical assistance. It's there to evoke the courtly gesture of a knight to his lady. Also, watch how Anakin holds her hand as long as he possibly can, gazing at her throughout. The torment of his mother's danger has taken precedence, but don't think for a second that he isn't still full of longing for their unfulfilled desires.

Now let's have a look at Watto. He's a small species, but his wings allow him to flap around at the eye level of whoever he's talking to. Yet when Anakin was a wee child, Watto chose to flutter up high to glare down at him. Obviously a power move.

The tables have turned indeed. Not only has Anakin grown into a tall imposing figure, Watto has grown weaker and not as capable of sustaining his hover for long. He sits, dumbfounded, to stare up at this boy who has 'sprouted.' There's even fondness in his tone, but come on, if he was really that fond of Ani he wouldn't have freed him and his mother. Speaking of, we learn that Shmi was in fact freed by someone with a familiar last name, so off we go to the other side of Mos Eisley.
But first, a dance through the asteroids....
