matrilAfter the quiet but intense emotion of Anakin parting from his mother, we leap into an action scene. And it starts with this striking image.
In a purely visceral sense, it's terrifying to watch this menacing figure draw rapidly closer, looming over an innocent child. It happens in a split second; Qui-Gon's warning, Anakin obeying and tumbling to the ground, then two warriors clashing in battle. Anakin scrambles onto the ship and they rescue Qui-Gon and we scarcely have time to catch our breath. What an adrenaline rush!
Symbolically, it's far more ominous. Maul represents the danger of the Dark Side, preparing to lunge and devour Anakin. Alas, Qui-Gon's post-death warnings will not be enough to protect him from the danger that imperils his soul. Much like the movie poster that had Vader's shadow lurking at Anakin's back, this image reminds us of what is coming, a foreknowledge that our heroes unfortunately lack.
