A Thousand Stars: Episode I, Part 15
Apr. 14th, 2022 09:39 amAnd we're off to the races! Amidst the flurry of preparations, Qui-Gon ensures that this race will determine more than the success of the queen's mission. The pod against Anakin's freedom. While he names the conditions casually, we know this is anything but an off-handed bet. Watto declares that fate will decide between Anakin and his mother. Fate? Does anyone really believe that his "chance cube" is evenly weighted?
Ah, but Qui-Gon has his own ways of manipulating chance.

And the cub lands neatly on blue.
Yet Qui-Gon is hardly a master of fate himself. Separating Anakin from his mother will have repercussions beyond anything he foresees. And take a look at this moment, when Anakin arrives at the hanger.

Something about the way they turn, almost in perfect synch, as they warily watch Watto fly away, seems to hint at the fate that will bind them together. Another tangle that Qui-Gon didn't anticipate.
Not that I'm suggesting all of these future events are inevitable. Anakin isn't a helpless victim to his destiny; he makes his choices of his own will. But there's a lot of dramatic irony for us, those of the audience who know future events, as we watch these characters who remain blissfully unaware.
Next, the race begins....
