Well, I'm still feeling less than stellar, since Luke has been mildly sick all week and I keep having to making a judgement about whether he's ready to go to school or not. Yes, I'm better off just keeping him home so I don't have to wonder, but then he'd miss yet another day and the school year is almost over and I want him to get as many days in as possible and...

Sigh. There's just no way I can make any choice that won't make me feel guilty.

But I'm not going to focus on that right now, because it doesn't help me feel any better to dwell on it. Instead, I'm actually going to post something related to fandom (!) Nothing wildly insightful; I'm sure it's all been noted before, but not here, anyway. I've been re-reading HBP, and noting a few things of interest. JKR has said that it had parallels to CoS, and I find it interesting just how many comparisons and contrasts there really are, if you're looking for it. Just the ones I've noted; some are much more significant or interesting than others.

CoS: We find out that Voldemort used to be Tom Riddle
HBP: We find out more about Voldemorts' grandparents, parents, and his own background as Tom.

CoS: We see Tom's past through a sort of magical memory device, but it is cleverly manipulated to mask important truths.
HBP: We see Tom's past through another sort of magical memory device, and memories have been manipulated by Tom or Slughorn to mask the truth, though eventually the truth does come out.

CoS: Harry has his first visit to the Burrow and stays there for part of the summer.
HBP: Harry goes to the Burrow for most of the summer.

CoS: Harry accidentally Floos to Knockturn Alley and eavesdrops on the Malfoys in Borgin and Burke's, hiding in a large cabinet.
HBP: The trio follows Malfoy to Knockturn Alley and eavesdrops on him in Borgin and Burke's, though Malfoy is partly hidden behind a large cabinet.

CoS: We are introduced to Aragog.
HBP: We see Aragog's funeral.

CoS: Harry and Ron use Polyjuice Potion to disguise themselves as Crabbe and Goyle.
HBP: Crabbe and Goyle use Polyjuice Potion to disguise themselves as other Hogwarts students.

CoS: The Vanishing Cabinet is broken (by Nearly Headless Nick, to help Harry escape from Filch).
HBP: The Vanishing Cabinet is fixed by Malfoy and used to let Death Eaters into Hogwarts.

CoS: We are introduced to Ginny's crush on Harry.
HBP: Harry realizes his feelings for Ginny, and they become a couple.

CoS: Lockhart makes a reference to love potions, the first we hear of them.
HBP: Love potions play a significant role, both in Tom Riddle's past and in the present plot (eventually leading to Ron getting poisoned, etc.)

CoS: The school is under the threat of being closed (thanks to Tom Riddle's memory).
HBP: The school is under the threat of being closed (thanks to Voldemort's command to have Dumbledore murdered).

CoS: We first meet Fawkes.
HBP: Fawkes leaves the school.

CoS: Harry's ability to speak Parsletongue proves useful in entering the Chamber of Secrets.
HBP: Harry's ability to speak Parsletongue proves useful in understanding the memories about Tom Riddle.

CoS: One of Voledmort's horcruxes, the diary, is introduced and destroyed.
HBP: By learning about horcruxes, we understand the true nature of Riddle's diary.

CoS: We meet Moaning Myrtle.
HBP: Malfoy strikes an unexpected friendship with Moaning Mrytle (does he know they are both victims of Voldemort's bullying?)

CoS: Harry and Draco face off in a duel.
HBP: Harry and Draco face off in a duel.

CoS: Harry is hit by a bludger during a Quidditch match and ends up in the hosptial wing.
HBP: Harry is hit by a bludger during a Quidditch match and ends up in the hospital wing.

CoS: In spite of Dumbledore's absence, Harry remains loyal to him in the face of Riddle's taunts.
HBP: In spite of Dumbledore's absence, Harry remains loyal to him in the face of the Ministry's attempts to interrogate him or use him.

Well, I'm sure there's more. Also, I'm sure I could draw up such comparisons between all of the books, one way or another, but I find these parallels most striking.

And now I'm off to clean the house (or at least sort of tidy it).
