Star Words: Episode VI, Part 1
Nov. 26th, 2020 04:57 pmNow that our family has finished our Thanksgiving feast and put away the leftovers, I can finally settle down to write the first installment of our final episode. I have to say that, if I was pressed to choose only one of the six films as my favorite, it would probably be Return of the Jedi. I'm a bag fan of unambiguous happy endings. So I'm going to enjoy this a lot.
We start rather quietly, with Vader's shuttle gaining admittance to the still under-construction Death Star. It's actually a striking parallel with the opening of the saga in Episode I, as explored in detail by Mike Klimo in his ring theory. It's also not the "lazy re-hash" of the first Death Star plotline that many detractors have claimed. More on that later.
In any case, Vader is intimidating Moff Jerjerrod to, as he claims, get him back on schedule. As if his overpowering presence wasn't enough motivation, he announces that the Emperor himself will be coming as well. Jerjerrod is offered good reason to fear this.
"The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am."

A perfect bit of understated irony. We've seen Vader strangle his underlings for failing to meet his expectations. That's...hardly the traditional definition of forgiving.
Which should make us realize just how terrifying the Emperor must be.
He's been a shadowy figure till now, spoken of but only glimpsed in a single hologram message. He's frightful mostly because of what has been said of him and what our imaginations have devised from the implications. What will it mean to see him in person? We'll find out soon, but first it's time to rescue Han.
Next time, Threepio's worried ramblings provide some handy exposition...
