Torso Fan!

Most fan behaviors fall one of two categories -- curative, meaning the gathering of collectibles and/or knowledge; and transformative, meaning the creation of fanworks. I lean more toward the artistic category, but that doesn't mean I've totally neglected the collecting side of things, particularly things that have a use beyond sitting in a display case.
So I love t-shirts. They're basically billboards for your torso, right? I mean, I guess you could wear plain undecorated shirts. That's okay too. But if you're looking for a visual way to convey your love of something, a t-shirt is the perfect medium. I've accumulated a bit of a collection over the years, and I'm going to devote a post to my favorites.
We'll start with my Star Wars shirts, because of course they are the majority.

This might be my favorite. I found it in the boys section of Target in 2005, when the release of Episode III meant you could still find prequel-themed items in fair abundance. It's simple, but that quote is perhaps the most pivotal, poignant, irony-laden phrase in the entire saga. It illustrates the conflict that informs much of Anakin's torment, spoken first against himself as a criticism of his premature execution of Dooku, and then against Mace's intention to do the same to Palpatine. Five simple words, and so much weight behind them. Also, there's a lightsaber. :D

This was a birthday present from Mark last year. He found it online somewhere, and it's delightful.

This one goes way back to at least 2002, when we were just married and I got this from my mother-in-law. (No, it wasn't a wedding present...not officially, anyway...) Not sure where she managed to find it, but tie-died Maul? Perfect. By the way, it also glows in the dark.

Another lucky find by my mother-in-law, a Christmas present from two years ago. (I suspect about half of our Star Wars collectibles have come from her, honestly.) The more you examine it, the more hilarious details show up. A picture of Yoda Claus on the mantle; the Force Theme music on the piano, the stockings for Luke, Leia and Han. I'm bummed at the idea of restricting its wear to Christmastime. Is it still acceptable to wear this when it's not December?

Mark got me this from my Amazon wishlist last Christmas. IT'S A MOVIE POSTER ON A T-SHIRT. I'd like to get the other two episodes eventually, though I admit there are some hazards of wearing people's faces on a bendable surface -- they can end up looking pretty warped and weird at times. Also, the fabric is exceedingly thin and translucent, so not ideal...but still, a MOVIE POSTER T-SHIRT.

Cheating a little here, since this is actually Mark's shirt, but I borrow it sometimes because it's so awesome.

Yes, I like Star Trek too, and this helpful guide should be very educational to those who might be confused. :D

Mark got us complementary MST3K shirts. Most people have no idea what it's about, but on the rare occasion that someone recognizes the characters, it's lots of fun to geek out with a fellow fan.

A bit of superhero fandom too. Once again, I had to go to the boys section to find this. Women's superhero shirts aren't unheard of, but they tend to be made of flimsier fabric and all too often they cover everything in pink. It's ridiculous.

I have loved this shirt to death. It's so full of holes I can't wear it by itself anymore, but I'll keep it forever because I am a sentimental fool.

Speaking of sentimental keepsakes, I've had this one since high school. Donald Duck was always my favorite of the Disney bunch -- we have very similar tempers, and I do a passable imitation of his quack.
So, I don't always wear themed t-shirts, but when I do, they are awesome.

Date: 2017-02-18 01:34 am (UTC)I love the Darth Vader Christmas one and think it should be worn any time you want (after all, we don't know when the people who lived a long time ago in a galaxy far far away celebrated it). It's also in marginally better taste than the Darth Vader Yule Log picture I've seen floating around :).

Date: 2017-02-22 03:22 am (UTC)And now I must find this Darth Vader Yule Log. Totally in bad taste, but I couldn't help chortling at the thought of it.
