"Side Project"

Int., Tori’s lab, late again. TORI is at the table, after adjusting camera. She is busy with her work and in a good mood.

TORI
Things are going well. I’ve been very productive this week. (Glances up, a little guiltily.) Of course I miss Eli...but there’s no doubt that I’m more disciplined when I don’t have any distractions. You’ve all seen how – endearingly – distracting he can be.

(Holds up pipette) I’ve been experimenting with a growth accelerant, and it’s been quite effective. I’ve gotten results at a much more satisfying rate. Which should hopefully secure another year of funding. (Makes face) If you want to know one thing I absolutely loathe, it’s having to worry about money in the middle of serious scientific inquiry.

(Works silently for a while, titrating the pipette’s contents into waiting containers)

(Hesitates, then) I’m thinking of starting a side project. It’s a branch of research that I’ve been considered for some time now, but after some of my recent breakthroughs with regenerating cellular growth, it may finally be workable.

The only problem is, I’d have to rely on my own money for most of the materials. (Sighs) Or at least, my father’s money. He and my mother set up a fund for my college tuition before I was even born. Thanks to scholarships, I didn’t have to use more than half of it. It’s just been sitting there for years, accruing interest.

I think my father assumes I’ll use it for the wedding. But I’ve already said I don’t want a big, wasteful party. There are far more important things those funds could buy.

(Pause) If I wait to get the funding approved through the institute, it would take years. Or it might never happen at all. (Laugh of disgust) Red tape is one of the greatest roadblocks to scientific progress.

(Cut) It would mean more late hours, cutting into my free time...but really, any sacrifice is worth it. If I were afraid of hard work and long hours, I’d never be where I am now. That’s the only way any real breakthroughs can be made. It’s always worth it.

The potential benefits...healing diseased tissue...repairing organ damage...

(Looks up) I’ll do it.
