Blast from the past

When I put my own name in a search engine, nothing comes up, but today, just for the heck of it, I put in my old tf.n name Cindé of Naboo, and found a few links to old fan fiction and discussion forum topics from six years ago. It sure takes me back. Boy, I sure wrote a lot of dreck. :P Some sorta decent stuff too, I guess. Heh. I found my old pre-2002 Episode II and III fics, A Game of Hearts and Poisoned Heart. Blech. Not horrible, but the movies sure blow them out of the water. I'm not sure why I wrote them, fully knowing they'd be contradicted and all...I guess I was just desperately hungry for the prequels to continue, and couldn't wait. The best thing about them is the titles. I like them. They still apply to the actual movies pretty well, I think.

One snippet did stand out to me, near the end of the Episode III fic - aside from a few details, it could almost have come straight from a scene in ROTS:



With the ship safely in hyperspace and the coordinates set for Tatooine, Obi-Wan left the cockpit to see if Padmé had awoken. The ship had a basic first-aid station, which was mostly useful for providing a cot comfortable enough for her to rest on. Not knowing what was wrong with her, there was little else he could do to improve her condition.

She was moving restlessly, murmuring. Obi-Wan hurried to her side and touched her forehead. It was warm, but not particularly feverish. Other than her being unconscious, Obi-Wan could not discern that anything was particularly wrong with her. His senses, however, were telling him otherwise. He could not shake off the foreboding feeling that something was terribly, terribly wrong.

Padmé woke suddenly, sitting up in bed with a gasp and falling immediately down again. Her voice was thin. “Where am I?”



As I recall how much I struggled with all the details in smoothing the way for Episode IV, continuity-wise, I have to say I really have sympathy for George Lucas. It's awfully hard to remember every tiny nitpick and still tell a great story. I bow to his far superior genius. ;)

As hard as it can be to write good fan fic, none of us came up with this stuff from scratch in the first place.

Very true. Even the really good fan fic is, at best, only a tribute to the original.

I think I deliberately tried not to speculate about all three of the new movies as they were upcoming (although I did get involved in a MSTing of a once-famous fake "Episode III" outline; MSTings are my own fondly remembered fanworks of the past), perhaps for fear that I would somehow create a mental image that the actual product wouldn't measure up to. Thinking back on it, though, some of the moments I was most impressed by were indeed the ones where my vague expectations of "how things would be" were shattered, and it may be that I can read a "character moments"-heavy AU and feel more content with the action of the movies.

My experience with the prequels has been a mixed bag of staunch spoiler-freeism and rabid speculation. With both sides, however, whatever expectations I've had have always been far surpassed. And sometimes shattered, which I agree can be a very positive thing.
