Drabble #5
Nov. 5th, 2006 06:32 pmI've managed to hold off on A/P stuff for a full three drabbles! So I think I'm entitled to go back to it today. ;) This is kind of related to an earlier short fic of mine, Something Wonderful.
Maybe next I'll tentatively branch out into another fandom...
A Blessing
----------
"This baby is a blessing."
Pressed close to Anakin, Padmé could feel his pulsing heartbeat, his shaking frame, and knew he wasn't nearly as calm as he pretended to be; that he wanted to believe his own words, but couldn't bring himself to let go of his fears. She ached to make everything right, to eradicate the memory of his nightmare and everything it implied. She didn't have the power to do that any more than Anakin did, but she could do something.
"Ani," she whispered, pulling away gently. "I want to show you something." She looked deep into his eyes and took both his hands. He looked back questioningly. Smiling, she put his hands on her abdomen.
He opened his mouth, and she hushed him. "Just wait," she murmured. The baby had been very active lately, kicking her in every direction, as if it had twice the usual number of limbs. When she held very still, it was sure to start moving after a moment, apparently impatient with inaction.
Sure enough, after only a moment, the baby stirred. She felt a kick right at the spot where Anakin's hand lay. His eyes widened. She saw the change spread across his face, the warm, surprised delight. The same thing had happened to her when she felt the first subtle movements inside her. Up unitl then, during her periodic visits to the med center where impersonal droids monitored her basic health signs and stress levels, she could hardly see her condition as anything more than a problem. After the first movement, she was suddenly aware that actual life was stirring inside her, miraculous and inexplicable. It was not merely a condition. It was a child.
"Our baby," Anakin breathed. Now his eyes were dancing. Padmé smiled again and put her hand over his.
She knew that nothing had been solved; that the next morning Anakin would be burdened by his fears and dismal dreams again. For the moment, however, nothing mattered but the baby they would raise together.
