Enraged by Luke's defeat of the rancor, Jabba declares that both he and his friends will be executed by way of an even worse monster. Han deflects his fear with sarcasm, but Luke has a very different response. With complete confidence he says that Jabba should have bargained - and it's the last mistake he'll ever make.

Seems like a pretty bold statement while surrounded by vicious guards, arms bound behind his back, sentenced to death. But that confident serenity persists as they're transported to the Sarlaac pit. I just love the contrast of these two men's faces here. Han is absolutely terrified, and therefore at peak sarcasm. Luke remains calm. Is he just deluded? I mean, it's not just him and Han and Chewie in trouble. The droids are stuck as Jabba's vassals, and Leia is in the exceptionally unpleasant position of being literally chained to the Hutt, dressed in humiliating garb.

Yet there on the gangplank Luke is still asserting that this is Jabba's last chance, not theirs. Free us or die. Naturally, everyone laughs. We get some nice cuts to everyone's face. Leia watching tensely. Han squinting in confusion. Artoo...what is Artoo doing? And Lando seems ready for something...

The illusion of Luke's powerlessness persists right up to the last possible second, when he actually jumps off the gangplank -- then springs up like a gymnast, catches Artoo's delivery of a brand-new lightsaber! and launches into battle. What a fantastic reveal. Luke handily dispatches foe after foe, Lando assists, Chewie happily joins in, and even Han does what he can in his half-blindness.

Then there's the perfect metaphor of Leia literally using her chains of slavery to strangle Jabba. What could be more fitting than to turn the tools of oppression against him? Don't ever call that outfit 'slave Leia,' yecccch. It's Leia the Hutt-Slayer, and I will accept nothing else.

As I've explored at length before, this sequence isn't just about pulling a fast one on Jabba. It's about giving him a chance for mercy. Luke could have devised a more aggressive scheme to rescue his friends without any clemency. That's not the Jedi way. Give Jabba a chance to negotiate first. Then...well, aggressive negotiations. Jabba left him little other choice. But oh, it's a delight to see Luke's newly-honed Jedi skills in combat. This is just one iteration of the return of the Jedi. More are coming.

Next time, the true villain of the tale...
