We return to Coruscant for another scene with Anakin and Padmé. There is visible relief on her face now that she has shared her secret with him, after being alone with it for so long. But even this happy moment shows signs of future trouble. Note how they are physically separated, barely contained within the same shot.



And as the scene ends, the screen wipe seems to eliminate Padmé's presence bit by bit, closing in on her happy face at the very last...



...only to be replaced with darkness. Worse, when an image does appear, Padmé's joy has been transmuted into anguish.



The camera pulls back more and more, as if Padmé is slipping farther and father out of reach, till the blackness claims her.



Painfully evocative. No wonder Anakin wakes up in a panic. And this nightmare will drive his motives for the entire remainder of the film. Small moments can upend galaxies.

I guess there have been times I've thought the screen wipes in Revenge of the Sith "push the envelope," but I also unfortunately tend to think smug comments about how "the prequels broke the rules" to be particularly annoying. Anyway, not that long ago I did see someone else offering a different analysis (that wasn't about "rule breaking") on the "tunnel vision" of Anakin's dream.
