A day late because of the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving!

After Dooku's death more hijinks ensue, both good and bad, until the Jedi are left with a malfunctioning command ship. As Anakin struggles for any landing other than a crash, he notes darkly, "I think we lost something."

An understatement indeed. Obi-Wan replies with cheery optimism, and they do in fact make it to Coruscant without total disaster. But this fractured, disintegrating imagery of the ship is just the first of many symbolic moments foreshadowing the fate of the Republic. I'm not really referring to the literal dissolution of the government, because that will be reformed as the even more centralist and rigid tyranny of the Empire. What really breaks down and disintegrates is the ideal of democracy and cooperation. Throughout the prequels, we watch all the principles upon which the Republic is based inevitably fraying and unraveling. Peaceful discourse in the Senate devolves into shouting and mob mentality. Diplomatic solutions are replaced with aggression. The voices of the people are drowned out by mindless worship of the supreme ruler.

Next time, a study in perspective....
