I've been contemplating an interpretation of this part of the movie where "Luke has staked everything on his father just 'going away with him,' and when that doesn't happen he lapses into supposing all he can do now is distract Vader and the Emperor from what the rest of the Rebels are doing until he's blown up with the Death Star too"... although with your take on just how Luke reacts at this moment, I'd have to start assuming "he's still developed quite a strength of character to react like this."
