The Council does not select Anakin for the mission to confront Grievous, as Palpatine surely knew they wouldn't. No, a Jedi Master is needed. As if Anakin needed a further reminder of that humiliation.

He's trying. He's really trying not to be resentful. When Anakin bids Obi-Wan farewell before his old master leaves on his mission, he apologizes and does his best to mend any rifts between them. Obi-Wan is only too happy to praise Anakin in return.

"You are strong and wise, Anakin. And I am very proud of you."

If you don't mind, I'm going to burst into tears now.

Obi-Wan means every word of it. They've had some rough patches, but in the end he has come to think very highly of Anakin. This conversation is, of course, a direct parallel to the moment between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon in Episode I. Obi-Wan apologizes for their argument about young Anakin; Qui-Gon freely forgives him and offers his share of praise. Even his prediction that Obi-Wan will "become a great Jedi Knight" is echoed here as Obi-Wan declares that Anakin has already "become a far greater Jedi than I could ever hope to be."

His only word of counsel is patience. Patience, for certainly the Council will not wait long to advance Anakin's rank. Alas, it is not the rank of Master alone that Anakin desires. And he's all too aware that no amount of patience will change the Jedi's position on any powers allegedly granted by the Dark Side.

Obi-Wan, at this moment, is probably brimming with optimism. Anakin seems to have mastered his resentment and anger; they're parting on the best of terms. The capture of Grievous will bring a swift end to the war. He might be looking back on that long-ago conversation with Qui-Gon and thinking that after all his concerns about Anakin, everything has worked out great. "Good-bye, old friend," he says cheerfully. "May the Force be with you."

He has no idea that this will be his last interaction with Anakin, Jedi Knight. When they meet again, he will have become a Dark Lord of the Sith.

See, this is why I'm sobbing.

Next, Anakin confides in Padmé, and I cry some more...
