With Yoda's difficult advice weighing heavy on his mind, Anakin goes to meet Obi-Wan after the briefing he missed. The war is going very well, but Obi-Wan is troubled. He doesn't like all the extra powers the Chancellor has been acquiring. Anakin doesn't see a problem. It'll only end the war faster, won't it?

This exchange might very well illustrate a marked difference in their political philosophies. Anakin, it seems, is a pragmatist. Perhaps he hasn't quite reached the point of claiming that the ends always justify the means -- it'll take a fall to the Dark Side for him to go to that extreme. But he clearly sees no problem with bending the rules to achieve a worthy goal. Obi-Wan doesn't agree. And he's growing more and more wary of the Chancellor's behavior.

"Be careful of your friend Palpatine."

The Jedi might not realize that Darth Sidious and Palpatine are one and the same, but they know at least that the Chancellor's increasing powers are a major concern. You'd think that this concern and wariness would protect them at least a little from the massacre that Palpatine is planning, but no. Their suspicion will actually end up helping his plans, by widening the rift between Anakin and the Council, and by positioning the Jedi as power-hungry usurpers when they try to arrest Palpatine. The problem is not that the Jedi are too blind to recognize the evil in Palpatine. The problem is that they assume far too many things -- that Anakin will remain loyal to the Jedi, that the Senate will side with them because they're taking down an evil tyrant, that Palpatine, however powerful, couldn't possibly be the mysterious Sith Lord himself. They are sadly, sadly mistaken.

On a much lighter note, it's delightfully fun to flip this line, as they do in the Rifftrax of Episode III. "Be careful of your friend, Palpatine....and your pal, Friendpatine." A lot of their riffs toward the prequels are much too mean-spirited for my tastes, but that riff made me laugh till I cried.

Next, the tense exchange when Anakin's appointment to the Council does not go as he had hoped...
