2013's costume choices arose from my discovery of this lovely website. A wide array of costuming ideas that don't devolve into the usual short-skirted, low-necklined, objectifying insults to all women everywhere? Hooray!

We decided I would go as Freyja, Nordic goddess of warriors, and Mark would dress as Odin. As it happened, I had already crocheted a chainmail shirt just for fun (not of real chainmail, alas, just sparkly silver yarn), so I could use that and make a helmet to go with it. That website's costume tutorials are geared more toward those who can't sew but have enough money to buy lots and lots of components for their costumes. Being more the opposite, I used my wonderful white dress yet again, and found a bunch of fabric scraps to sew myself an apron and a sheath for my sword. Oh, did I mention the sword? I found it in the costume section at Target. It was great.

I kept going for a fierce warrior look and ended up with...dull surprise. Ah well.

For Mark, we needed a cloak, an eyepatch, and some ravens. I sewed them directly onto the cloak. He already had the wig and beard, of course, because he's a theatre person. ;) We also took a staff he got years ago at a Renaissance-type fair and stuck an aluminum foil spearhead onto the end. We did our best to look formidable.

Our kids had their usual eclectic mix of costumes.

I made Ryan's Winnie-the-Pooh costume, and he carried around one of those jack-o-lantern buckets disguised as a honey pot to collect his candy. Emma was a superhero of her own invention, "Super Purplella!" and Luke was surprisingly happy in his skeleton costume. We didn't plan on having him wear the mask, but he clearly wanted to put it on and was beaming behind the ghoulish skull. The hat was just another accessory he decided to wear. Always fun to see him enjoying our weird family customs.

Next time - the kids choose a unifying theme for their costumes, and Mark and I return to Star Wars for the first time in nine years. :D
