Wow, twenty posts already? When I did I start posting these? February. Wow. Well, the momentum's going strong; I have no interest in slowing down....
With the aim of finishing Episode II next, I have two songs for the opening scenes. To portray the grim start of the attack on Padmé's ship I used the first piece from the musical, the chain gang/parole sequence. It's similar to Look Down, or the beggar song, that I used for the beginning of Episode I, but with some differences that seemed to work better for this part.
ATTACK ON THE PLATFORM/REUNION
(Original,until around 7:05)
Typho: Beware, beware
This city full of strife
Beware, beware
They’ll take away your life
Padmé: I knew the risk
I could not stay away
Typho: Beware, beware
There’s peril here today
Padmé: They need me here
The Senate needs my voice
Typho: Beware, beware
It’s not the safest choice
But if I’m wrong
No danger after all
Padmé: Beware, beware!
I see my handmaid fall
Typho: No time to grieve
We’ve got to leave
Duty calls
Mace: Beware, beware
The Separatists are strong
Palpatine: I will not let
This conflict last for long!
Yoda: Beware, beware
A darkn’ing cloud I see
Beware, beware
What treach’ry it could be
Still alive you are, and a great gift it is
But to keep you safe
We must consider this
Padmé: I don’t want protection
I want some answers now
Palpatine: Please!
M’lady, your safety is precious to me
Do it for me
And we will send your friend
A Jedi you know
Master Obi-Wan
Padmé: I will if I must. But justice bring
Dooku’s to blame
Mace: That cannot be
To kill is not in his nature at all
Padmé: I fear there’s a blindness that is keeping us
Away from the truth.
Obi-Wan: Seems you’re a bit on edge
Anakin: No, you’re just imagining
Obi-Wan: Like in that gundark’s nest!
Anakin: You fell; I rescued you
Obi-Wan: Oh yes, that’s true
Do not let fear take hold
Don’t let it take you
Let your mind be calm
Anakin: Ten years ago
I never will forget
Ten years ago
The last time that we met
Jar Jar: Old friends are back!
So good to see
Obi-Wan: It’s good, as well
To see you too
Padmé: It’s been too long
How glad this makes me
And now I must ask
Who can this be
My goodness, how you’ve grown, Ani!
Anakin: And you’ve grown too
That is, you’re more
Beautiful, for a Senator
Padmé: You’ll always be
That little boy
On Tatooine
Who brought me joy
Obi-Wan: And now, to work
With your protection in place
Padmé: That’s not enough
I want to know the murderer’s face
Anakin: And I promise you, Padmé
We’ll follow your call
Obi-Wan: We’ll follow our mandate
And that is all!
Anakin: Just tell me why
A pair of trained Jedi Knights
Should do no more than guards
Who keep watch in the night
Obi-Wan: You know we’ve been through this before
And we will not do it again, my Padawan
It’s not your task to lead the way
You are to follow where I lead
Now let’s move on
Padmé: It could be
We need not fear
I’m safe now that you’re here
The hour is late
If you’ll excuse me, my friends
I’m off to bed and on your wise protection
I’ll depend
Typho: I know that she will be
Far safer if you’re near
I’ll check the guards downstairs
Be sure that we’re prepared
Obi-Wan: My thanks to you
And we’ll do our part as well
Let’s hope this night is quiet
And our worries are quelled
Anakin: I cannot bear the sting I feel
My deepest dread becoming real
She has forgot
Ten years I’ve thought of her each day
And now she hardly glanced my way
I am forgot
Obi-Wan: Anakin
Let go your fear
She’s glad that we are here...
For Zam's attack and their chase through Coruscant, I figured I'd finally use the Thenardier's Waltz of Treachery, a delightfully unctuous tune. I don't know that it perfectly matches the tone of this sequence, but there is a certain see-sawing quality to the music that seems appropriate. Also, the intro that conveys Valjean's determination to honor Fantine's dying wish was useful for Anakin describing his dreams about his mother's suffering. So, here we go.
ZAM'S ATTACK
(Original, starting about 0:30)
Obi-Wan: All is in order down below
But what is this? Why has she covered up the camera?
Anakin: If we would hope to catch the fiend
Then we must find a way to lure him out of hiding
So she says, and I agree
Obi-Wan: A risky plan indeed
If there is danger, will you know?
I see a weariness in you
Anakin: My sleep is troubled; even so
I’ll know if she’s in need of rescue
But my mother is in pain
All my dreams are filled with darkness
And her agony is mine
Obi-Wan: But those dreams will pass in time
Anakin: I’d rather dream of Padmé now
(Obi-Wan: Watch yourself; you’ve made a pledge)
Anakin: Her intoxicating smile
(Obi-Wan: She’s a Senator; beware)
Anakin: I cannot help the way I feel
(There’s something there)
Obi-Wan: I sense it too; the danger’s real
(Anakin saves Padmé; Obi-Wan leaps from the window to grab the droid)
Anakin: In the dark, in the night
Find the source of this terrible blight
Faster still than our foe
We will follow wherever he goes
Now I see Obi-Wan
Catch his fall
Obi-Wan: And what took you so long?
Anakin: You know me, took my time
Perfect speeders aren’t easy to find
Obi-Wan: Save your wit; there he goes
Here’s a chase to keep us on our toes
Where are you going?
Anakin: If ever we would catch this fiend
It does no good to risk this chase
We’ll use this shortcut and catch him by surprise
At least I think this is the way
Obi-Wan: What a plan! What a waste!
Now we’ve lost him. It’s such a disgrace
Anakin: Pardon me. Down below
There’s the speeder we seek; off I go
Obi-Wan: Every time. Reckless boy
Knowing just how to get me annoyed
Anakin: Here at last! Now I see
It’s a changling. And she, not a he
As we crash, the chase goes on
And more lecturing from Obi-Wan...
Obi-Wan: Take this now. And beware
Such a thing you must handle with care
Anakin: Yes, I know. She’s in here
Obi-Wan: Have some patience, and settle your fear
Do not run. Bide your time
Feel the Force granting peace to your mind
Easy now; come with me
Let us know, who is paying your fee?
Zam: Just a job
Anakin: Tell us now!
Zam: It was a hunter -
Obi-Wan: Who’s killed her somehow
There is more we can’t see
Something deeper in this mystery...
I've also written a sequence in Episode IV that will fill in the last hole before Mos Eisley - scenes from the Death Star as well as Luke discovering his aunt and uncle have been killed. I've used the beggar song that I previously used in Episode I, as it's useful for covering lots of material. :)
TECHNOLOGICAL TERROR
(Original)
Vader: Today
We have the Rebels in our grasp
Today
We’ll see the end of civil war
Today
Our foes will breathe their final gasp
Tarkin: It’s done
Today the Senate is no more
Tagge: How can the Empire keep its pow’r?
Without the Senate, can this be?
Tarkin: Fear is the way, and from this hour
None dare oppose, as you will see
Motti: We have a pow’r beyond imagining
Here in this station we have made
Use it right now, demolish everything
Anything standing in our way
Use it now
Show them all
What we have
Show them all!
Vader: That fear
Will fade when it has run its course
It pales
Beside the power of the Force
Motti: So you always claim
Doesn’t frighten me
All your mystic power
Hasn’t got us what we need
It’s hasn’t helped you name
Where their hidden base could be
Nor gotten us the stolen plans -
Vader: A lack of faith indeed
Tarkin: Vader, let him go
This fighting has no use
We’re on the verge of vict’ry
And we’re tightening the noose
Once we’ve found their base
Their cause will be no more
The rebels will be crushed
And we will fin’ly end this war
Vader: Now we will discuss
The secret of your base
I’ll sure you’ll be persuaded
I can see it in your face
Leia: Give me strength, give me hope
Give me strength, give me hope
Give me strength, give me hope
Luke: Can’t understand this cruel attack
Sandpeople, sure, but why like this?
Obi-Wan: Sandpeople's blasts aren’t so precise
Stormtrooper tracks - a clue you missed
Luke: Jawas sold the droids
They must have tracked them here
And so they tracked them further
Now the awful truth appears
Going home
Going home, going home, going home
Too late to save them, now they’re gone
All of the fam’ly I have known
With all this anger and this grief
All of my life is overthrown
Like my father, one path’s left for me
And so a Jedi I will be!
Vader: Somehow the princess still resists
The strength of her will I could not guess
But with the mind-probe I’ll persist
Till I have made the girl confess
Tarkin: There is a way to get us what we need
Now that we’ve come to Alderaan
One simple word and she will learn to heed
Fear is what I rely upon
Never fails
Make them fear
Never fails
Never fails!
Today
It ends. The rebels will be done
Today
At last. Our vict’ry will be won
