It's true about demonizing abusers, and what that ends up doing is blinding a lot of people to the possibility that someone they know, even a good friend or dear family member, could be capable of abuse. They shut down the victim's claims because, "Oh, no, he couldn't possibly do that - he's a great guy! I'd definitely recognize that kind of jerk straight off." No, alas, they look and behave an awful lot like all the rest of us.
Is there ever a police detective protagonist who did everything by the book and was never even close to the edge of getting suspended? That would really be a novelty at this point.
