Part V

Not exactly getting an avalanche of responses here, but whatever - this is a useful archive at least. ;)

For the first interaction between Leia and Han in Episode V, which sets the tone well for the contentious beginnings of their romance, I chose a mostly non-romantic song. Red and Black is a back and forth between Enjolras's revolutionary fervor and Marius's pining for Cosette. ("Who cares about your lonely soul" always makes me chortle.) My version has the back and forth between two people too stubborn to show vulnerability.

STAY OR GO

(Original, starting at 1:50)

Han: General, I’ve got to leave
I’ve been waiting too long
With this price on my head
I can’t risk any further delay

General: Yes, I see this must be
Though for us a great blow

Han: (Turning to Leia) Well, your Highness
I guess this is it

Leia: I know
Han: Well, don’t get mushy now
So long

(He leaves; Leia pursues him)

Leia: Wait, Han, don’t go
Stay
I thought you said you’d stay

Han: No
That hunter changed my mind

Leia: Stay
We need the help you give

Han: No
You think that I’ve been blind?

Leia: I don’t know what you want
What you think I should say

Han: No, you probably don’t
It’s because of your feelings for me

Leia: You’re a natural leader
A great help to us

Han: No! That’s not what I meant
I can’t just let this be
There’s something here with us
That anyone could see

Leia: Go
You’re just imagining

Han: No
I wouldn’t leave like this

Leia: Go
This game is getting old

Han: No
Still waiting for a kiss?

Leia: For a kiss! Just as soon I would kiss
A Wookiee if I’m forced to it

Han: Now I that I could well nigh arrange
And you could use a good kiss too
Your Highness, if you only knew
Don’t tell me you don’t see this change!
(He storms off)

Leia: Go
It’s just like him to go
No
I know his heart is good
Stay
If only he would stay
Yes
If only he still could!

Eventually I'll include an interlude here with Luke and Yoda on Dagobah, once I figure out what song to use. ;) Then, for the moments when Leia and Han grow closer while hiding on the Falcon, I brought back On My Own as an echo of Padmé and Anakin. Instead of forbidden love, now the tension is predicated upon the fact that Han doesn't plan on sticking around once they've escaped the Empire's pursuit. I admit that the moment before they kiss is pretty rushed, musically, but maybe just imagine the song slowing down a bit there. Because this is imaginary, so I can make it do whatever I want. :P

WHEN I'M GONE

(Original, again)

Leia: No matter how I try to hide
The frantic way my heart is beating
Just let me go, I don’t want this
These empty words I keep repeating
Yet deep inside I know
I wish he’d stay and never go

Han: For just a moment in her eyes
There’s something hopeful and delighted
And then she pushes me aside
Your Highness, don’t get so excited
Keep pushing me away
There’s not a reason I should stay

When I’m gone
It’s best if I forget her
Alone again
It’s really for the better
Without her
It’s easier without her
Then why do all my thoughts
Keep circl’ng round and round about her?

Leia: When he’s near
I can’t deny my feelings
Don’t get close
My heart’s already reeling
Still grieving
The home that’s lost forever
I cannot risk a bond of love
That someone else could sever

Han: All those times
You say I bother you
Just admit
That sometimes I’m all right

Leia: Maybe so
But you’re a scoundrel too

Han: Is that so?
I like the sound of that

Leia: Don’t whisper
Don’t hold my hands so tenderly

Han: Don’t be afraid
You’re trembling -

Leia: I’m not trembling

Han: You like me
You like that I’m a scoundrel

Leia: I happen to like nice men

Han: I’m a nice man

Leia: No, you’re not

(They kiss; Threepio interrupts; Leia leaves)

When he’s gone
And all of this is over
There’s no way that this will last forever
Without him
I’ll have to go on living
Stop dreaming, live without it,
Doesn’t matter; life goes on

Leia: I love him

Han: I love her

Both: I love him/her
But he/I will soon be gone

Just wanted to say that the songs are adorable but the reason I haven't been commenting (or *a* reason) is that I've never seen Les Miserables so I can't really make any perceptive comments :). Obviously at some point I should remedy that.

Heh, that's a pretty good reason! If I could offer my suggestion - and feel free to ignore it and do whatever you like - don't watch the movie version first. It's fine for what it does, but they cut a fair amount of music and rearranged some scenes and such. Also, Russell Crowe is a disappointingly bland Javert, not to mention an unimpressive singer. Anyway, you can probably cobble together the entire musical in clips from Youtube. I've seen it performed live twice, but most of my familiarity with the songs comes from listening to/watching clips over and over again. ;)
