Star Words: Episode IV, Part 22

How do our heroes sneak from the ship to the control room? It's comically simple. Impersonating a member of the scanning crew, Han calls, Hey down there! Could you give us a hand with this? and lures in the stormtroopers. Offscreen, a scuffle takes place and Luke and Han are now in possession of two stormtrooper uniforms. It's practically cartoonish, which I think perhaps we forget in all our serious analyses of these films like they're sacred writ. They can be deep, of course, but they can also be wonderfully silly.

While Luke and Han argue about noisy fighting versus sneaking around, Obi-Wan gets right to business. He can see from the schematics that this is a one-person job (or one-Jedi job, anyway) and must convince Luke to stay and wait. This is a poignant moment, for Ben seems to sense that he's not likely to return. He urges Luke to protect the plans, to ensure that further tragedies like Alderaan will not happen, and offers deep wisdom at their parting.

"Your destiny lies along a different path than mine. The Force will be with you. Always."

Destinies and paths are a frequent theme of these films. I don't believe it's a denial of free will so much as an exploration of the responsibility we all carry to make the best use of whatever lies before us. This will be a very hard lesson for Luke to learn. But with this charge comes a blessing.

The more famous phrase, of course, is May the Force be with you, but I like how Ben says it here. It's more definitive, a promise that Luke will have the Force as his companion even if his mentor is gone. It's a gentle touching farewell, and Luke will surely treasure it all the more knowing it was the last thing Obi-Wan ever said to him in life.

Next, Han and Luke continue to clash over their ideals, or lack thereof.....
