Star Words: Episode II, Part 17

Just as Obi-Wan's investigation is picking up serious momentum, Anakin's storyline is similarly heightening in tension. As if Padmé's rejection weren't enough, it's immediately followed by nightmare about his mother. Now his ethical dilemmas are compounded. On top of his conflicting duty to the Jedi Order and his feelings for Padmé, he must grapple with the reality that his mother is dying and no one is helping her.

How often have his dreams come true before? How does he know the difference? Does he really know the difference after all? Whatever his past history with visions, he has no doubt that this one is real.

Once again the setting provides a perfect backdrop for his inner conflict. There is the appearance of serenity and calm, a beautiful view of the lake and the sky...but there are remnants of stormclouds and puddles on the ground, evidence of a tremendous tempest. No peace after all. Anakin cannot stay true to his Jedi duties and also save his mother. He must sacrifice one or the other. He has decided to disobey his mandate and go to Tatooine.

Padmé offers a third choice.

"I'll go with you."

This simple utterance says so much. The previous night, she rejected the idea of falling in love. But it's clear that there is already a connection here, however she tries to keep it at bay. She is in perfect sympathy with Anakin's pain, gently urging him to talk about his nightmare, never doubting that his concerns are valid, and then immediately, without hesitation, offering to come along with him. It provides a convenient loophole to the mandate to protect her (though it's highly doubtful that anyone on the Council would see it that way). It allows him to do what he needs without having to sacrifice everything else. And it's just the sort of reckless thing that Captain Typho worried Padmé would do. She and Anakin are not so different, after all.

"I'll go with you." There is also a deeper meaning here. Symbolically, Padmé is joining her fate to Anakin's. Though she hasn't yet reached the crisis where she will speak her feelings aloud, she already feels bound to him, with a powerful impulse to stay by his side and support him through his anguish. She'll go with him; she'll follow him...until he goes down a path she can't follow.

Next time, some words that Anakin would do well to accept...
