My favorite twist on the "changed through love" bit is a story where it would have ended very, very badly for the woman who tried to fix her man, if the male lead weren't actually in deep cover the whole time. It doesn't really work when romance is the central focus, but romantic leads need the "luck of Mrs. Edwards" a lot more than they need the no-I-totally-changed-his-basic-nature plot.
